FilmLight product specialists Sebastian Rasfeld and John Quartel attended Beyond Hands on HD in Hanover last week to showcase and introduce FLIP to young German filmmakers. Having not attended this show before, some comments from our intrepid duo.
JQ: “I was very surprised that there was such a truly spectacular set of equipment at the disposal of the attendees and the people teaching them. I have never seen so much high-end camera gear in one place, not even on the set of Scorcese’s Hugo! Over the three days there was an intricate schedule of sessions that were a combination of tutorial style demonstrations and ‘hands-on’ workshops where the attendees got a chance to operate all of the different cameras.
FLIP was well received and we got our message across by taking part in a ‘look & LUTs’ tutorial session. ARRI’s colourist Utsi created a look using Resolve from footage shot earlier. The grade was exported as a LUT and taken on a USB stick to one of the sets where there was an Alexa and Live Grade system. Although the intention was to show how the Live Grade system could implement the LUT and also allow some CDL grading underneath it, Sebastian and I quickly applied the same look in FLIP which was a cinch and created a stir amongst the crowd who gathered around to learn more about FLIP!”
JQ goes on to say: ‘We created an impact in the ‘looks and LUTs’ session by pointing out FLIP’s ability to implement spatial grades. Geoff Boyle (DOP) asked Utsi to create, in his look, some halation in the highlights, but we pointed out that this is something you can’t describe with a LUT. The FLIP, however, would be able to do that, this is when everyone in the room got even more interested in FLIP’s creative capabilities.
In the hands-on camera sessions, we got a chance to attach an Epic, an Alexa, and an F65 to the FLIP. It was informative for us to see how the monitoring outputs are configured for these different devices and for the attendees to interact with the FLIP unit.
SR sums it up by saying ‘we got very good acknowledgement from the lead teaching staff who said “I’d always prefer to have products on set that come from people who really know what they are doing, like FilmLight.”
