FilmLight knowledge and expertise key factors in choice of multi system
FilmLight, a leading provider of digital filmmaking technology, announced today the purchase of its Truelight colour management system by world-leading Sydney based vfx facility, Animal Logic. In keeping with the system’s modular and flexible approach, Animal Logic will deploy Truelight across multiple applications running on multiple workstations throughout its feature animation and film VFX divisions.
“We are rolling it out to all of our CG lighting, compositing and review station seats, as well as our DI suites,” comments Guy Griffiths, Director of R&D, Animal Logic. “We will also be using it to calibrate our 2K digital projector.”
Griffiths says he was initially drawn to Truelight by the quality of its Monitor Probe. “It gave me a glimpse of the depth of the experience in colour technology that had been accumulated at FilmLight, from the science and engineering to practical operation in a facility.“
According to Griffiths, three criteria were important when it came to choosing Truelight colour management over competing systems. First, was that the supplier have a real depth of knowledge about colour science, with years of practical experience across multiple aspects of its application. Second, that the company’s product was part of a developed workflow and lastly that it would work with the variety of systems used at Animal Logic.
“Only FilmLight and Truelight were able to meet all our criteria,” says Griffiths. “As the technology landscape changes with CRTs being superseded by LCDs and digital projectors we needed a system that would be able to evolve as well and that is what we have with Truelight.”
As to what the Truelight installation will mean to Animal Logic’s clients, Griffiths hopes that by ensuring colour consistency across the facility, colour will simply no longer be an issue for them. He continues, “if it ever becomes a topic of discussion, they can feel confident that the visuals they see on a CRT or DLP will be the same as on projected film, and the Truelight brand gives them that reassurance. And for those situations where the job calls for mixed media such as film and HD they’ll know that we have the tool set from Truelight to deal with it.”
