FilmLight Announces Dual-Gauge Version of Northlight

Added support for 16mm formats enables filmmakers using lower-cost formats to utilise high-quality pin-registered scanning

FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, announced today a new dual-gauge version of its Northlight high quality digital film scanner, which supports 16mm and Super 16mm film. The majority of Northlight scanners shipped so far have been 35mm only but the new dual 16/35 option is available immediately, and offers filmmakers a precision pin-registered alternative to telecine transfer.

The Northlight dual-gauge version will continue to scan at the highest quality, now also capturing the full detail available on the latest 16mm stocks, enabling the best fidelity in both HD transfers and digital 35mm blow-up for theatrical release. With a format changeover and setup of just a few minutes, the Northlight scanner enables facilities to address all common film stocks using a single machine.

The FilmLight team has been designing and building 35mm and 65mm scanners based on specific production requirements since 1984. Northlight represents the third major design revision brought about by this innovative research and development programme. Northlight has been designed for the digital mastering of entire feature films, both 16/35mm and 65mm, for current release and back catalogue preservation.

“The fully digital post production of feature films is now a reality, and film demands the purest digital film mastering quality, exceeding the specifications of all distribution media,” comments Peter Stothart, Commercial Director of FilmLight. “With Northlight’s new dual-gauge option, a much wider range of facilities and film-based productions who opt to use the lower-cost 16mm formats can also take advantage of the highest quality film scanning.”
