Company Will Unveil and Ship New Truelight Colour Calibration Hardware and Baselight v2 Colour Grading & Finishing System; Preview New Fully Scalable Architecture
FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, announced today that the company will showcase new versions, hardware, and capabilities for its existing products and provide an early look at an upcoming product at the National Association of Broadcasters Conference (NAB), April 19-23 in Las Vegas. FilmLight will give the first public demonstrations of a new hardware solution for its Truelight colour calibration system and a new version of its Baselight grading and finishing system – Baselight v2. Both will be in general release at the show. FilmLight will also preview upcoming features for its Northlight scanner, and give a technology demonstration of a new fully scalable architecture – codenamed SpeedFX – for full resolution post production and film mastering.
Truelight Hardware Adds Real-Time Calibration
The only commercially-available colour management system for pre-visualising film images on electronic display devices, Truelight enables directors and directors of photography to extend their creative vision into the final stages of colour processing. NAB attendees will see the first public demonstrations of new Truelight HD/SD SDI hardware, which is designed to sit in a High Definition or Standard Definition SDI stream to provide real-time Truelight 3D colour transformation for accurate print emulation on an HD display or digital projection system. The Truelight hardware solution also includes an HD test signal generator and soft clip features, enabling facilities to use it for video deliverables as well as film.
Baselight Film Grading System Advances
FilmLight will also unveil a new release for Baselight, a premier film grading and finishing system created specifically for the Digital Intermediate process. Baselight v2, which will be shipping at NAB, includes a unique gestural interface — a pen and tablet which directly controls the on-screen image, enabling colourists to concentrate on the on- screen image while manipulating colour levels rather than moving between monitors and controls.
NAB demonstrations will feature this interface, as well as giving visitors a look at new gallery and heads-and-tails views, which enable colourists to store, present, and re-use different grades, a new tracker and the integration of HD.
In addition, FilmLight will present technology demonstrations of a new fully scalable architecture – codenamed SpeedFX – for full resolution post production and film mastering. Initially, it will provide a seamless performance upgrade to Baselight, with almost limitless I/O bandwidth and interactivity. SpeedFX combines the flexibility of software based image processing with the productivity of dedicated hardware solutions. A unique combination of state-of-the-art computer technology and FilmLight-developed hardware and software brings unprecedented processing power and creativity into the mastering suite.
Demonstrations of the Baselight grading process at FilmLight’s booth will feature presentations by Adam Glassman, the senior colourist who used Baselight’s creative tools to grade Anthony Minghella’s Cold Mountain at London’s Framestore-CFC, using material from the film.
Northlight Continues to Progress
FilmLight will also highlight upcoming features for its Northlight high-quality, pin-registered scanner. NAB will mark the North American debut of the dual-gauge Northlight scanner supporting both 16 and 35mm formats, as well as a new Linux host GUI incorporating EDL scanning capability. More than 19 film labs, effects houses and post facilities worldwide have chosen the Northlight scanner as a higher quality alternative to telecine for the digital mastering of entire feature films for current release and back catalogue preservation, and a faster alternative to traditional film scanners.
