FilmLight Ships Truelight Real-Time Hardware Colour Management System

Truelight SDI provides real-time 3-D colour transformations for accurate film print emulation on HD displays or digital projection systems

FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, gave attendees the first public showing of SDI hardware for its Truelight color management system. Truelight is the most comprehensive commercially-available system for viewing film images on monitors or projectors. Truelight SDI fits into a High Definition or Standard Definition SDI stream, and adds real-time 3D colour transformations for accurate film print emulation.

Key Capabilities

FilmLight’s Truelight SDI hardware facilitates colour management in digital film workflows:

  • Supports HD and SD standards
Truelight supports all current HD and SD standards, and dual-link 4:4:4 or single-link 4:2:2 operation. It also provides automatic selection of Rec709 or CCIR601 colour-spaces.
  • Supports both film and video deliverables
A soft clip feature and programmable video legaliser ensure a clean signal that will pass quality control checks.
  • Facilitates setup by enabling easy calibration of downstream devices
An HD test signal generator displays patches or a pluge, for simple monitor or projector calibration.
  • Multiple Setups
Users can store up to 15 cubes concurrently and access them over the network from a Web-browser or software application.
  • Enables facility-wide monitor matching
Truelight’s Calibrate software facilitates fast, accurate setup and calibration to a known state, and also enables monitors to be correctly characterized for use within the Truelight 3D cube.

Additionally, by working at the HD SDI signal level, Truelight SDI can be used to calibrate output from third party systems. Truelight SDI hardware is completely independent and so fits into the HD output viewing path of many 3rd party systems.

Field-Tested by Top Facilities

Truelight SDI hardware has been beta tested and purchased by a number of facilities worldwide, including ILM, The Moving Picture Company, LipSync, Framestore-CFC, Cine-Byte Imaging, VTR and others. Cliff Plumer, ILM’s Chief Technology Officer, explained, “Truelight essentially makes your computer monitor look like projected film. When you know that what you see on the screen is what you’re going to get in the final project, the turnaround time on production is much faster. You don’t have to keep recording out and processing film. The overall quality of the project improves. That’s why we brought in Truelight, and we’ve been impressed by its performance in testing so far.”

FilmLight’s Commercial Manager, Peter Stothart, noted, “Films are gravitating to the digital intermediate process not only because it extends creativity, but also because it saves time and effort. Proper film print emulation underpins DI and makes it an attractive and viable workflow.”
