FilmLight, a leading provider of digital filmmaking technology, announced today that Ollin Studios, Mexico City has upgraded its DI workflow with the installation of a Northlight film scanner and Baselight Four colour grading system. The new products replaced the hardware systems used by the company and were chosen for their technological advantages, ease of use and endorsements from fellow users.
Carlos Iturriaga, Managing Director of Ollin comments; “The FilmLight installation means that we are now the most capable post-production facility in Latin America for 2k work. For Mexico this is very important, as the DI process is completely new and growing fast. Our clients wanted to see that there was a way of post-producing features with a full digital pipeline and better quality rather than using the traditional lab process. The confirmation is that we have filled the Baselight’s schedule for a complete year in the first two months of it running.”
Having compared the different options Ollin chose the Northlight scanner for many reasons; firstly that is has the highest resolution scan chip available providing them with a solid future path when more resolution is required. Secondly the Northlight installed base: many of the world’s leading postproduction facilities are using it. Thirdly the support from FilmLight in terms of its knowledge of the market and its products from initial quote to system installation and maintenance.
Carlos comments on the choice of the Baselight Four; “We compared the different options, and we found that above all, the interface is beautifully designed. We had to make their transition of our excellent colourists and technical artists easy to manage. The overall design of the software is also impressive especially with the multinode rendering so that, uniquely, you can have 2k and even 4k in realtime. The integration of Truelight in the Baselight was also essential and so FilmLight became the only option.”
Ollin Studios has already finished three features with the FilmLight workflow with three more currently in production. Carlos adds that the systems have provided their clients major benefits in terms of colour correction and especially the preview option; “We even can have the colourists match the shots in realtime and integrate them in the show at the moment artists want to see them… This is amazing!”
Carlos concludes: “One of the complex aspects of DI is data management and with Baselight and Northlight we integrated networking, asset management and VFX to already running projects in a very short time. In addition the interface allowed our colourists to start working with a completely new approach to colour correction in days.”
