CinePostproduction adds more Baselights

Leading German post-production group acquires new FilmLight colour grading systems for film, television, commercial and stereo 3D projects

Germany’s CinePostproduction, with facilities in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Halle, has increased its investment in colour grading technology from FilmLight, purchasing Baselight TWO and Baselight Assist systems, and upgrading an existing system to Baselight TWO.

The new and upgraded systems will include the highly anticipated new Baselight 4.3 software, which includes transforming new features and a significant increase in performance and productivity. CinePostproduction now has a total of 11 Baselight systems across its organisation. The new systems will help the company keep pace with a rapidly growing project list that includes feature films, television programming and commercials.

CinePostproduction has recently experienced a sharp increase in demand for stereo 3D post services and it is using Baselight for their Stereo3K pipeline to respond in unique ways. The facility typically grades stereo 3D media in the form of two 3K image streams. This pipleline enables them to perform Stereo 3D sweetening and depth grading, and achieve the most superior 2K image quality.

Additionally, CinePostproduction has developed a proprietary way to use Baselight to manipulate 3D geometry in the grading suite. “Our technique allows us to alter depth perception and volume of individual objects within the picture,” explains CinePostproduction Stereographer Daniele Siragusano. Siragusano adds that he is also looking forward to the new version which includes new stereo 3D tools that streamline many routine tasks.

Baselight also serves as the cornerstone of the company’s workflow for conventional projects. CinePostproduction uses its Baselight Assists as an editing and compositing platform for television and commercial projects. “We considered adding another conventional editing system but concluded that Baselight Assist is the best complementary product to our existing systems,” Fröhlich says. “In our pipeline, we are able to grade and composite directly from raw files, RED or ARRI. We never render proxies.”

CinePostproduction’s Baselight TWO systems, meanwhile, perform double duty. The systems are normally attached to grading suites set up for television projects. However, when feature film projects arrive, they can be quickly reconfigured for use in one of the facility’s 140m² DI grading theatres. “It takes just five minutes to prepare them for cinema work,” Fröhlich observes. “Now that we have two Baselight TWOs, together with our existing Baselight FOUR, we can can grade several DIs at the same time.”

In designing and implementing such novel workflows, CinePostproduciton has benefitted from strong support from FilmLight. “It’s been a very productive partnership,” says Fröhlich. “FilmLight has shown a lot of interest in what we are trying to achieve, and supported us both through the service they provide on a daily basis and through product development.”
