FilmLight expands creative possibilities for professional post at BIRTV 2016

More leading facilities in China adopt Baselight; new functionality and products complete end-to-end finishing workflow

As China increases its professional post-production market sector, growing rapidly with content creation and adopting sophisticated workflows, FilmLight is planning a major presence at BIRTV 2016 (stand 8B21, 24–27 August, China International Exhibition Centre, Beijing). As well as exhibiting on its own stand – with comprehensive demonstrations of the latest version of its core Baselight software alongside the new Daylight software solution for dailies – FilmLight also has a show presence with reseller Jebsen Industrial Cinematic & Broadcasting Solutions and partner soCam.

Baselight software version 5.0 – revealed earlier this year and soon to be available for all users – introduces a new approach to HDR colour grading with the Base Grade, colour space families and gamut optimisation. Baselight 5.0 also adds new compositing functions, making it the ideal hub for the complete finishing process. It also provides support for high dynamic range/extended colour gamut grading for resolutions to 4K and beyond.

Baselight is the finishing tool in the complete grading environment based around FilmLight’s BLG metadata format. This format allows grading decisions and LUT definitions made at any part of the production process to be captured and used to build the final grade. Daylight sits at the beginning of this colour chain, providing a powerful dailies platform for shot management and high-performance transcoding between a multitude of input and output formats.

Following the opening of FilmLight’s office in Beijing last year and the appointment of the new head of FilmLight China, Eric Liu, and his team, the growing market in China is increasingly embracing the FilmLight approach to collaborative, non-destructive, render-free workflows. Among the latest Chinese facilities to install Baselight tools are YueSeXuan Culture Media, MOGO Studio, Illumina in Beijing and FLIP in Shanghai.

FLIP Shanghai is a new full service post-production facility, working in gaming as well as movies, television series and advertising with a focus on R&D and training talent.

“I have been following FilmLight’s development of Baselight for many years. I have continued to see ongoing positive technological advances as well as a drive to ensure quality customer service, which are equally important to our users,” said Mr. Leung, co-founder and chief colourist of FLIP Shanghai.

“When it comes to VFX, FilmLight’s BLG workflow and sophisticated colour management makes it very easy to see the current grade wiped with the original image without any FilmLight hardware or software, ” he added. “I have great confidence in Baselight – renowned among our clients as the most advanced colour grading system – and with FilmLight’s 24-hour online technical support, we can always satisfy our customer’s needs.”

Illumina specialises in high-end visual effects in the film and commercials industry.  They have recently purchased a Baselight system along with FLUX server for their DI suite, and use Baselight Editions for NUKE to ensure that background plates are seen graded so VFX artists can meld CGI and real elements together to achieve a perfect blend.

FilmLight will be exhibiting Baselight and Daylight on stand 8B21, FLIP at the Jebsen Industrial Cinematic & Broadcasting Solutions on stand 8B10, and Baselight in soCam’s private showroom.
