FilmLight demonstrates extended grading creativity at Expo Cine

The Baselight environment, already the most sophisticated suite of creative tools for colour grading, has been boosted with the recent introduction of version 5.0 of the core software. The benefits of render-free, collaborative workflows with Baselight will be demonstrated at Expo Cine, Video y Televisión (Mexico World Trade Center, 28 June–1 July 2016).

Baselight 5.0 delivers a completely new and intuitive approach to grading and mastering. As well as enhanced support for HDR technologies and workflows, the upcoming release includes: the Base Grade, which accurately mimics the way the eye appreciates colour; colour space ‘families’, which simplify the deliverables process for distinct viewing environments such as television, cinema and mobile devices; and gamut optimisation for simple-to-implement gamut mapping for wide dynamic range images, which form part of the new generation of HDR displays. A difference keyer has also been added for production quality blue and green screen keying without leaving Baselight, as well as a paint tool for simple retouching, and, for Flame houses, a Matchbox shader to allow VFX to be graded in context.

FilmLight offers a complete range of solutions for grading and colour management from set to deliverables, and will be introducing its innovative new approach to grading in association with local partner AMTEC on booth A-1.

This includes the introduction of Prelight to the Mexico market. This freely licensed Mac OS X application is designed to help DoPs and other professional creatives to author and review looks in pre-production and onset; it will enter beta testing this summer.  Prelight complements the FilmLight products FLIP and Daylight, which already provide full on-set and near-set grading capabilities. Combined together, these solutions ensure meaningful colour and flexibility throughout the post process, as well as fitting in naturally with FilmLight’s BLG workflow in which the grade can be passed easily and refined right up to the moment deliverables are created.

Attendees will also be able to see the latest version of Baselight Editions on the Artec stand, E-12, alongside the introduction of a new professional colour bundle for editors: Avid Media Composer plus Baselight for Avid, for Mac or Windows, for $1799.

“Mexico is a world class post production city, that embraces high end technology at every levels for commercials, feature films, TV content creation,” said Francisco Monje, Account Manager Latino America at FilmLight. “Our clients maintain their commitment for higher quality, creativity and long tradition of colour grading. They always look for innovative workflows, as they understand the need for efficiencies in their pipelines and the need to apply metadata flow.”

Monje continues, “In recent years, clients have been implementing FilmLight’s Baselight Linked Grade (BLG) colour workflow as their metadata interchange format across dailies, editorial, VFX and finishing.  The most talented post houses and broadcasters in Mexico, and indeed around the world, benefit from our BLG-enabled solutions.”
