FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, announced today that Cinesite, one of the world’s largest full service effects and post production houses, has put their newly-installed Northlight film scanners to work on a number of current and upcoming films at the company’s London and Los Angeles facilities.
In London, Northlight is used primarily to enable digital effects creation. The facility has used it to scan visual effects for “Troy,” and “King Arthur;” for film scanning to enable trailer creation for “Girl With a Pearl Earring” and “In the Cut;” and for visual effects scanning to enable effects creation by other facilities for “If Only” and “Alexander.”
In Los Angeles, Cinesite utilizes the Northlight scanner to enable Digital Intermediate and restoration projects for client companies, and in its Scanning & Recording service department. To date, Cinesite L.A. has used the Northlight to scan these Digital Intermediate projects – “Tap Heat,” “The Last Samurai” and “Gothika,” and for effects creation by other facilities on “The Day After Tomorrow” and “First Daughter.”
Both Cinesite facilities installed the high quality pin-registered Northlight scanners in July 2003, putting them into service alongside their Kodak Lightning scanners at both locations. The London installation coincided with the expansion of Cinesite’s operations into a new facility. Mitch Mitchell, Head of Imaging at Cinesite London, said, “Cinesite’s clients come to us because we always deliver the highest quality scans. We’ve succeeded in matching the qualities of the Kodak machine on the Northlight, which also offers a speed advantage, We can mix machines on a job and you can’t tell the difference in the scans. And when one machine is tied up, we can still take on emergency shots for other projects. They’re interchangeable.”
FilmLight Commercial Director Peter Stothart, said, “Cinesite has a strong reputation for scanning expertise, and we knew how stringent their requirements are, so we’re pleased that they’ve chosen to partner with us for their next round of growth. By taking advantage of Northlight to deliver services focused on both effects creation and Digital Intermediate processes, Cinesite is helping us to foster the new ways of working that are changing the film industry.”
