Facility Becomes the First in the Balkans to Offer 4K Scanning
Restart Production, a post-house in located in Ljubljana, Slovenia has purchased a Northlight 2 2K|4K film scanner from FilmLight. The company, which provides film restoration, digital intermediate and high resolution video post-production services, becomes the first company in the Balkans to offer scanning via Northlight. Indeed, Restart Productions’ Northlight 2 will be the only 4K scanner in that area of Europe.
“We conducted extensive testing and found that reference scans from Northlight were clearly superior to the imagery we were getting from the scanning systems we have been using,” said Restart Production co-founder and producer Bojan Mastilović. “We want to deliver the best quality product to our clients and therefore we need the industry’s best film scanner.”
The aesthetics and workmanship of Northlight 2 also appealed to Restart. “The system’s marble surface looks as though it is built to last forever,” Mastilović observed.
Mastilović added that Northlight will not only enable Restart Production to improve the quality of its product, it will also help it to extend its reach into new markets. As the leading facility of its type in the Balkans, it already attracts most of the top quality projects from countries from the former Yugoslavia. (Restart, for example, recently completed the digital restoration of Ples v dezju, “Dance in the Rain,” a 1961 film widely considered the best film ever made in Slovenia). Now, the company plans to pursue work in central Europe, northern Italy and other nearby countries where 4K scanning services are currently unavailable.
“As a member of the EU, we can offer our services duty-free to companies in other European countries, and Northlight will make us a very strong competitor,” Mastilović said. “Slovenia has traditionally been the technological leader in the southern Europe and is a traditional centre for film and video production in the region.”
Restart Productions’ clients for film restoration include the Slovenian Film Archive and the Slovene Film Fund. It also does considerable business in commercials for local and regional markets. Additionally, it recently completed its first DI project, the feature film Reality from first-time Croatian writer-director Dafne Jemersic, scheduled to debut on the festival circuit this fall.
Mastilović noted that his company plans to extend the value of its new Northlight 2 by upgrading its colour grading system and by adding a film recorder, resulting in an end-to-end solution for film restoration and DI.
