Evolutions, the largest independent post-production facility in the UK, has purchased a Baselight HD colour grading system and upgraded its existing Baselight FOUR from FilmLight as part of a new £1 million expansion. The system will be installed in a new, purpose-built grading suite and used for final grading of long-form programmes, including the popular shows Top Gear, F-Word and The Apprentice.
Evolutions colourists chose Baselight for a number of reasons, these included the Blackboard control panel, Baselight’s creative toolset and in part, the new integration technology developed jointly by FilmLight and Avid®. This technology allows Baselight to share access to an Avid Unity SAN with Avid editing and compositing systems. Evolution’s current upgrade also includes the installation of a 32Tb Avid Unity ISIS, and a mix of 25 Avid Media Composer Nitris DX and Symphony Nitris DX systems. The Baselight-Avid combination will result in a flexible workflow that will allow colourists, editors and compositors to work collaboratively and more efficiently. The company has also installed a Digidesign ICON console creating a new flagship 5.1 dubbing theatre.

The Baselight-Avid integration makes conforming projects faster by allowing artists to filter images by time-code, key-code or UID and automatically, nearly instantaneously, locate the correct image. Additionally, it facilitates the bi-directional sharing of metadata between Baselight and Avid systems. “This technology allows you to grade and make editorial changes simultaneously,” explained FilmLight UK Sales Manager Arthur Johnsen.
