World-leading visual effects company—The Mill have added a third Baselight EIGHT colour grading system to the two Baselight EIGHTs already installed in London. The company selected the system for its New York facility, which already includes seven Flame suites, three Smoke suites, three Grading suites and 30 CG workstations. The Baselight EIGHT, designed to enable clients to grade a mixture of commercials, long-form and DI from SD to 4K, will be installed this month.
The Mill and FilmLight have developed a collaborative relationship over many years and Jamie Wilkinson, Mill Colourist, who had started out at The Mill London, already had experience with the system and worked closely with FilmLight’s R&D team to develop and test new features.
Jamie commented, “Baselight already has a proven track record in London, and FilmLight has the enthusiasm and commitment to continuously introduce and improve features.”
The integration of Truelight also played a key part in the selection. Wilkinson described how ‘invaluable’ it was especially when grading feature films.
Baselight integrates with most SAN storage solutions and allows seamless collaborative workflows between departments. The system also has direct control of all telecine features on the Spirit range including primary grading and noise reduction. This enables the colourist to replicate a traditional film-to-tape process whilst providing creative flexibility.
“Baselight allows you to simply switch standards from SD to 4K without having to reposition your windows,” stated Wilkinson. “Having unlimited layers and the ability to use mattes created in 3D amongst other things is another great plus.”
