Sony Pictures Technologies Selects FilmLight for 4K DI Facility

Sony Pictures Technologies has chosen FilmLight’s Baselight colour grading system and Truelight colour management to be installed in a dedicated post-production facility at Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Culver City headquarters. The systems include editorial, grading and finishing and will form the basis of a completely new 2K and 4K data-centric workflow. Specific to the design of this architecture is the ability to handle color, asset and format management, from on-set camera through to final deliverable.

The deal includes Baselight EIGHT, FilmLight’s highest performance colour grading system that enables clients to play and grade multiple 4K streams in real-time; Baselight FOUR and Baselight Assist stations. FilmLight’s industry standard colour management technology, Truelight, is also incorporated, covering on-set, production and post-production.

FilmLight’s longstanding relationship with Sony and its cutting-edge approach made it the right fit for our facility,” said Chris Cookson, President, Sony Pictures Technologies at Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This new equipment will enable us to provide efficient and extremely fast 4K file-based workflows.”

All of the Baselight systems will be equipped with FilmLight’s high-performance Parallel GPU processing, 3D stereoscopic toolset, and new RAW file format handling. Together, the Baselight systems will be capable of handling 4K DI features, 4K film restoration, and 3D stereoscopic productions. All systems will be linked using a combination of FilmLight’s high speed cloud network and Sony’s proprietary high-speed interconnect.

Mike Grieve, Sales Director at FilmLight commented, “Since FilmLight’s inception the company has been pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the digital intermediate space. This new investment combines both companies’ technical leadership to push the technology even further and creates a complete camera-to-screen 4K DI pipeline. We are very excited to be working with Sony Pictures Technologies on this project.”

The installation of the Baselight systems will be staggered over the next five months with the first delivery in early May.
