PostWorks New York, Captive Audience Productions, and Hollywood Intermediate/MDI Add Truelight, Northlight, and Baselight
FilmLight Ltd., a leading provider of digital filmmaking technology, announced today that PostWorks, New York and Los Angeles-based facilities Captive Audience Productions and Hollywood Intermediate/Matchframe Digital Intermediate (MDI) have purchased its digital systems for film scanning, colour grading, colour calibration, and 2K playback.
DI Business Growth Prompts Additional Purchase for Hollywood Intermediate/MDI
The Matchframe Digital Intermediate division of Hollywood Intermediate was the first company in the U.S. to purchase the Baselight colour grading system, in August 2004. Since then, the demand for the company’s DI services for both big-budget and independent films has grown exponentially, prompting them to purchase a Northlight film scanner and two additional Baselight grading/conform stations this summer. Hollywood Intermediate president David Waters explained, “Our DI business is increasing all the time as the DI industry is experiencing exponential growth. FilmLight’s Baselight has been an important part of that growth, and by bringing in the full complement of Baselight, Truelight, and Northlight systems, we can meet all of our clients’ needs.” Senior MDI colourist Julius Freede completed work on films including ‘Smile,’ ‘Marilyn Hotchkiss Charm School,’ and ‘Edison,’ using the Baselight system.
Colour Accuracy is Part of Every Project at PostWorks, New York
PostWorks, New York, the city’s largest full-service post facility, recently added Truelight colour management to its film and video project pipelines. The company implemented the Truelight SDI hardware on a centralised router, enabling it to calibrate colour in any of their SD, HD, or 2K conform and grading suites – and a Truelight monitor probe that can be used with any editorial or colour grading system that has SDI video output. PostWorks also purchased the Truelight Cube Builder, which engineers use to characterise the properties of suites in the facility as the first step of the digital-to-film print process.
PostWorks, New York president Billy Baldwin said, “It’s critical to maintain colour accuracy throughout the DI process, and FilmLight has it down to a science – there’s no guesswork. Truelight is a complete colour management system – probe, software, hardware box, and years of knowledge of video monitoring, film recording, projection, and visual perception. It works, predictably and perfectly every time, leaving no question as to the final product. ” PostWorks, New York recently applied Truelight on film DI processes for ‘Everything is Illuminated’ and ‘Milarepa.’
Captive Audience Gets Immediate Feedback with Truelight 2K Playout
Los Angeles-based visual effects company Captive Audience Productions has purchased the Truelight player to enable real-time 2K playout of visual effects shots. In this implementation, Truelight gives compositors immediate confirmation on exactly how their shots will look on screen before handing them over for final assembly. Instead of down-rezzing shots to play them back in real time for review, a process which introduces artefacts into the shot, Creative Audience compositors render out shots and send them directly to the Truelight system for playout on digital projectors. Visual effects producer Josh Logan explained, “By playing out the shots on Truelight, we know that we’re looking at the exact image we’ll hand over. We can make sure the matte lines look right, that there are no missing frames. There’s no risk of communication breakdown because we’re looking at the exact, actual frames that will go to the DI facility.” Captive Audience first used the Truelight Player on ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose,’ and plans to adopt a full-scale Truelight colour management system across its facility in the coming months.
FilmLight Commercial Director Peter Stothart noted, “The continued adoption of FilmLight systems by top facilities worldwide testifies to the growing demand for digital services, and our ability to best meet the industry’s preference for cost-effective, efficient pipelines for film and video applications. Working with companies as diverse as Captive Audience, PostWorks, New York, and MDI helps us to continue to address the wide variation in requirements that are developing across the industry.”
