FilmLight, a leading provider of digital filmmaking technology, announced today that NAB 2006 will see the worldwide launch of the Northlight 2 film scanner.
Northlight has established itself as the quality standard in many of the world’s leading film post houses and Northlight 2 brings a 4X increase in scanning speed – faster than two frames/second at 2K and 1 frame/second at 4K. New features include infra-red scanning option, support for third party dustbust applications and archive/restoration.
Northlight 2 performance is ideally suited for long-form scanning in all film formats at the highest quality for visual effects, Digital Intermediate, restoration and long form television production.
New features of Northlight 2 include:
- Speed enhancements ensure that Northlight 2 is significantly faster than the original Northlight scanner, with a scan time at 4k resolution of about 0.75 seconds per frame.
- A brand new reflective lens design, using the latest advances in optical technology, to match the 8k line array with as near perfect linearity as can be achieved.
- Northlight 2 uses 8k CCD line arrays, which are mathematically reduced to 4k resolution in the head electronics. This provides advantages such as true alias-free 4k resolution whilst retaining the characteristic random nature of the film as it is captured at grain level. In addition having in effect two photosites per pixel captures more light enabling precise quantisation to achieve the required linear 12-bit resolution without dither or noise.
- A new infrared channel option that assists with automated dust-busting. This is a simple detection channel which does not attempt to provide any repairs itself: rather it delivers a key channel to trigger third-party repair software downstream. The goal is to provide perfectly clean plates quickly and accurately, at quality levels to match the demands of digital intermediate, and without tedious manual labour. This option will also be available as a field upgrade on existing Northlight scanners.
Availability and Pricing
The Northlight 2 film scanner will be available during 2006 from £280,000. All existing Northlight scanners can be field upgraded to Northlight 2.
