Toronto-based facility brings in full line of FilmLight equipment
FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, announced today that Cine-byte Images, Canada’s premiere digital film facility, has purchased its entire line of digital filmmaking solutions – the Northlight high-quality pin-registered film scanner, Baselight colour grading system, and Truelight colour calibration system. Cine-byte will integrate this new equipment providing an expanded all-digital workflow for film digitization and color grading for feature and independent films.
Cine-byte is bringing in Northlight to replace its existing pin-registered scanner. Cine-byte President, Alan Bak, noted, “We were looking for a scanner that would give us the high quality we were used to, but which would allow us to scan projects faster, so we could not only accommodate shrinking film schedules, but also take on more projects. Northlight gave us even higher quality than we had previously, at much, much faster speed.”
The addition of the Baselight colour grading software and Truelight colour calibration system will enable Cine-byte to expand its services and meet the growing demand for color grading within a Digital Intermediate workflow. “With Baselight, we’ll be able to become involved in more of the process, interacting creatively with the directors and directors of photography,” Bak noted.
He added, “The Baselight colour grading software really impressed us. It’s definitely the furthest along in terms of development when compared to other software-based color graders. It’s very stable, gives us a lot of real-time capabilities, and fits perfectly into the economics of our facility and the Digital Intermediate budgets for the feature and independent films that are handled in our market.”
FilmLight President, Peter Stothart, said, “Cine-byte has been doing great film digitisation work for over a decade, and we’re looking forward to helping them extend their services to include colour grading. We share their strong belief that a digital film process needs to be based on equipment designed specifically for film, and we’re pleased that FilmLight’s integrated pipeline is enabling them to expand their business.”
Cine-byte’s FilmLight equipment will be the foundation of a digital theater currently under construction in Cine-byte’s Toronto facility. The new viewing area will be equipped with digital projection and high-resolution monitors specifically designed for viewing during the colour grading process.
