Cinecolor Selects FilmLight’s Northlight to Upgrade Latin American DI Operations

Production Giant Acquires Three 4K Scanners for Facilities in Argentina and Mexico

Cinecolor, one of the largest film and video production companies in Latin America, has purchased three Northlight scanners to support its growing post production operations. The company, based in Santiago, Chile, will deploy the 4K, pin-registered digital film mastering scanners at its Cinecolor facilities in Buenos Aires and Mexico City, and at a third, as yet undecided, facility. The scanners will be used primarily in Digital Intermediate workflows for feature film projects.

Cinecolor becomes the first post production facility in Latin America to employ Northlight in a DI workflow. “Cinecolor has been the leader in DI across Latin America and investing in FilmLight enables us to raise the bar even further,” said Stefano Levera, technical director of the Chilefilms Group. “Northlight gives us a competitive advantage over other DI service providers in our market who cannot match the quality or performance.”

Cinecolor reviewed a range of high end film scanning solutions, according to Levera. The company chose Northlight because it delivered both quality and value. “The price and performance of Northlight are ideally suited to the Latin American market,” he said. “FilmLight understood the realities of our market enabling us to deliver premium DI quality for Latin American budgets.”

Northlight is a high-quality, pin-registered film scanner. Unlike telecine based machines that have been adapted for scanning, Northlight was engineered specifically for the exceptional demands of digital film mastering, providing image stability and quality surpassing that of traditional pin-registered film scanners used in special effects post production.

Cinecolor Chile has been offering DI services through its Cinecolor Argentina and Cinecolor Chile facilities for more than two years now. Its first project was “Machuca,” a film directed by Andrés Wood about the 1973 coup that overthrew the Chilean government of Salvador Allende. It went on to become one of the highest grossing Chilean films of all time. Northlight will enable the facilities—for the first time—to perform scanning for such projects at resolutions up to 4K.
