New Wave Entertainment, Hollywood’s premier entertainment marketing company, has enhanced its post-production operations through the purchase of a Baselight TWO colour grading system from FilmLight. New Wave plans to use its new Baselight primarily for grading television spots promoting new feature film releases. The company has already used the system on campaigns for Hotel Transylvania, Looper, Skyfall and several other films.
New Wave’s new Baselight replaces an older grading system designed for film-originated media. “With virtually all films now being digitally-captured, we needed more horsepower,” said New Wave Entertainment Senior Colourist Sam Dlugach. “Much of our source material now arrives in 4K resolution or greater, so we needed a system with fast and powerful image processing that is compatible with our level of workflow.”
Dlugach adds that previously, grading raw camera files was difficult and time intensive, but with Baselight’s native LUT management, “We can now apply LUTs directly to RED and ARRI files and quickly achieve the look the DP intended.”
Baselight has allowed New Wave to eliminate tape media from its workflow, saving time and costs. Dlugach can now grade media in non-linear order for further efficiency gains. Baselight’s ability to save grades and reapply them is another significant enhancement.
“A television campaign for a movie frequently includes dozens of spots,” he explained. “Now, a grade that we have created for a scene can be automatically reapplied when we use that scene again.”
New Wave Entertainment also benefits from FilmLight’s world-class technical support. “What has impressed me most is the customer service,” Dlugach said. “This facility cannot afford downtime. FilmLight provides technical support 24/7. If I have a problem, I can pick up the phone and always reach someone who has the answer.”
