New top-end finishing house sees first implementation of Baselight’s latest generation of hardware

LA facility, SHED Santa Monica, built around Generation VI for optimum colour

FilmLight today announced that SHED, a new creative finishing boutique in Santa Monica, California, is the launch customer for the latest generation of Baselight multi-GPU hardware platform, which will be introduced formally at NAB2015. In the configuration at SHED, the hardware employs multiple GPUs to provide faster access to high quality raw content, as well as boosting grading power for Ultra-HD, 4K, or higher resolutions.

The founders of SHED include a renowned director, technology innovator and cinematographer as well as world-class colourist, Yvan Lucas. The alliance of such talents aims to develop a new way of working primarily in high end commercials and motion picture productions, starting with the cinematographer and the director on each project and working seamlessly all the way to the finish. By providing a personal service that embraces all aspects of the camera-to-post colour workflow, SHED plans to help the world’s best producers, cinematographers and directors realise their vision and create exceptional images.

SHED, Santa Monica, which is a sister company to SHED London, is up and running and has started business with the new Generation VI multi-GPU Baselight TWO system. SHED has three Baselight rooms in its Santa Monica facility, a mobile Baselight production unit and a further two more Baselight rooms in London. The finishing house will incorporate numerous technologies from FilmLight, including Baselight with Blackboard control surface and Slate compact grading control panel. It will also add location and dailies services, based around FilmLight’s Daylight system with Slate, shared storage, and review and digital asset management systems from CODEX.

Yvan Lucas is a pioneer of colour timing, starting at film laboratory Éclair in Paris before moving to digital grading and the USA. His career spans 30 years, and has included work on some of the most iconic films of all time, including Fury, The Hunger Games, Malificent, The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Django Unchained, Argo, Amelie and A Very Long Engagement. He is also supervising colourist on Quentin Tarantino’s current production, The Hateful Eight.

“I am thrilled to be a part of SHED because we are taking a different approach to production; blending the latest technology and tools from FilmLight and CODEX with cutting-edge workflows and the best talent to maximise inventive options while saving time and money,” commented Lucas.

“The people behind SHED have a remarkable knowledge of the evolving digital media landscape, and they are also very creative,” said Wolfgang Lempp, co-founder of FilmLight. “Yvan Lucas has built a global reputation as a top-notch colourist and we are confident that in this new venture he will take full advantage of the creative freedom and high productivity we put at the heart of our colour pipeline.”

Generation VI Baselight hardware is being introduced at NAB2015, on the FilmLight booth, SL6830.
